Winter paints a Marshmallow World…

by Peg Lariviere

I looked up as I snowshoed along the Young Fox trail at Blind River and saw this scene. The song A Marshmallow World was the first thought that came to mind. Lyrics by Carl Sigman, music by Peter DeRose; it was recorded by several singers when it first came out in 1950-51. My favourite version is Dean Martin's from his 1966 Christmas album.

No human figure, no recent tracks, makes this scene feel like a holding place between moments: the hush after a snowfall, the breath before thaw. One reads solitude here not merely as the absence of others, but as a space for attention. The world shows itself through textures, temperatures, and the interplay of light and shadow, inviting the viewer to inhabit that showing.

Following a snowfall, winter transforms the landscape into a cozy world that envelops us with its comforting beauty. It’s as if nature has wrapped everything in a soft, white blanket, inviting us to appreciate the warmth and magic the season brings. Imagine stepping into this confectionery kingdom—each step as if sinking into a pillowy marshmallow. The once-familiar terrain now feels like a gentle embrace, inviting us to revel in its whimsical beauty.

Merry Christmas! Have a wonderful New Year! Looking forward to sharing a moment with you on the other side.
