Unwind and Enjoy | A Day of Rest and Contemplation
In the early 1900s, as men moved north for mining and forestry jobs, farms developed to support the workforce. Many of these farms were later abandoned as younger generations sought stable employment. Over the past 15 to 20 years, Old Order Mennonites have relocated from southern Ontario to northern Ontario, seeking affordable land for traditional mixed farming. The term "Old Order Mennonites" refers to certain conservative groups that adhere to traditional customs of worship and community life. These Mennonites often name their group after their settlement location; for example, those living in the Matheson/Val Gagne area (Taylor Township) are called the Taylor Old Order Mennonites. This photo was taken outside their Meeting House on Monahan Road, between Val Gagne and Matheson, Ontario. These Mennonites have revitalized many abandoned farms in the region.
Today, our Northern Ontario farms provide locally raised beef, pork, poultry, and related products, as well as fresh produce, dairy, cheeses, honey, and baked goods to residents in Northeastern Ontario.
