Blind River, Ontario, Canada. An address on the North Shore of Lake Huron where this landscape photo captures the wide-open horizon, windswept pines, and sunlit rock that make Northern (Central ;) Ontario so unforgettable. Dorothy Inlet, which this shoreline overlooks, forms the mouth of the west arm of the Blind River.
The naming of natural features such as bays, islands, and rock outcroppings often reflects the personal connections of those who mapped these areas. Such is the case with Dorothy Inlet, which piqued my interest as I sought to uncover the story behind its namesake. I found this reference, but I don’t know if it’s the Dorothy I’m looking for: Ontario History, Scholarly Journal of the Ontario Historical Society, since 1899. On page 30, there is the following listing: DOROTHY: Inlet, Algoma; after Mrs. W. 1? Anderson (q.v.), Ottawa. I dug a little deeper and ended up having an enjoyable afternoon reading the Anderson Record in the Ontario Historical Society, Vol 6 - 1905, starting at page 109. Again, not sure if it’s the correct Dorothy, but it was a good read!
