The Pink Lady Slipper orchid relies on a fungus from the Rhizoctonia genus found in the soil for survival and reproduction. Unlike most seeds, orchid seeds don't contain food supplies; they depend on the fungus to break open the seed and provide nutrients. This can take anywhere from two to fifteen years to happen. As the orchid matures, the fungus extracts nutrients from its roots, creating a symbiotic relationship common to many orchids. Bees are essential for pollinating pink lady's slippers. They are attracted to the flower's bright colour and sweet scent, leading them into a pouch where they become trapped. Inside, hairs guide the bees to exit openings beneath the pollen-masses. As they escape, they pass under the stigma, depositing any pollen they carry from other flowers before collecting new pollen. Long story short - please don’t pick them. Thank you.
