You can almost feel the cool of the pavement underfoot, smell the clean, earthy scent of rain on soil, hear the soft drip from leaves. It's a scene of renewal and clarity: the world simplified to a single direction forward, framed by nature's symmetry. This, and more, is Point Farms Provincial Park, on the shores of Lake Huron, a short distance north of Goderich, Ontario.
For several years around Thanksgiving, when the park was virtually empty, I loved the opportunity to borrow my mother’s motorhome and escape for four days of camping with my boys—Pops, Pepper, and Peanut. When I turned into this driveway, it always felt like I was coming home. It was heartwarming to have Gord join us for the weekend as well. Those moments spent together brought me a deep sense of renewal and clarity.
The Point Farms area has a rich history as a destination for family relaxation, dating back to the mid-1800s. At that time, the Point Farm Hotel (pictured here), a summer resort, operated on what is now designated as park property. This hotel attracted visitors from across Southern Ontario and the northern United States until its closure in 1915.
