We stopped in Sunridge, Ontario, to stretch our legs, and the sound of the water bombers drew us to the lakeshore to watch them pick up their loads of water from Lake Bernard. Trivia: It’s claimed that Lake Bernard is the largest freshwater lake in the world without an island.

This fascinating and gross mass of fungus in the woods along the shoreline caught my attention. I believe this is Guepinia helvelloides, or Apricot Jelly Fungus. Though older specimens can be tough, it’s an edible fungus with a bland taste. It can be eaten raw in salads, pickled, or preserved in sugar. And, no, I wasn’t adventurous!
